Merdeka Open House 2008 -Mee and My Malaysia

I stumbled through Babe in the city’s site and then I learnt that she is holding a virtual party for the upcoming Malaysia Independence Day. This year’s theme was Mee and My Malaysia.

I was wondering what noodles I should cook for this event; it must be something unique and also very original. Initially I thought to cook the “Teochew Sweet Noodles” that my mum will cook for us on our birthday. But ..hehehe.. I tell ya, I hate these noodles, it just tastes wrong!! Even though it is very unique (as not many have heard about it) I just can’t serve this on this important event ;-)) I will feel really guilty towards you guys.

Then, I decided to ask for help from my mum, who had been a coffee shop owner (She sold noodles – Pan Mee, Yee Min and Tom Yam Mee). Haha, mum suggested that I cook her popular (well, just in my hometown) noodles – Yee Min Soup. I was a bit hesitant to cook this because it is very very common and I am pretty sure there will be someone out there cooking this dish for this particular event. But the point is it is my mum’s recipe, it’s unique and it’s very homey tasting (for me anyway). So, Yee Min it is!!!

Thanks mum for sharing this recipe!! I love mum’s Yee Min Soup, being a meat lover, I love my noodles with heaps of minced meat and meat balls, being a daughter of a noodles hawker, I always get what I want ;-)) I love the texture and the taste of Yee Min, the taste of the soup..hhmm.. yummy!!

Soup:
Soy beans 150g
Dried anchovies 100g, washed and drained
200g of Jicama
1 slice of Ginger
Pepper 6-7 (cracked)
4 liters water
Some granules of ikan bilis stock

Method:
Put all the ingredients in the saucepan then bring to boil. Simmer for an hour and add some salt to taste.

Ingredients:
Eggs
Minced Pork with black fungus
Pork balls
Vegetables

Method:
Scoop some soup into a clay pot, bring to boil. Then add in the yee min, cook till your preferred texture. Add in the pork balls, vegetables and minced pork with black fungus. Break the egg into the soup and the noodles is ready to be served once the egg is set.

Hey, if u r in Malaysia, then u can get Jicama in the market, Jusco, Tesco ..heheh.. almost everywhere.. In hokkien, we call it "mang kuang", cantonese "sa kok". Hopefully this will help.

I don't know if I've had this dish before. It seems very popular. I can imagine all the yummy flavors being soaked up into the yee mee.
